Vaccine Protocols - Quail Creek Veterinary Clinic - OKC, OK

DOGS

-         Three year Rabies one year after previous Rabies vaccine

-         Distemper, Adenovirus 2 (Hepatitis), Parvovirus, Parainfluenza every 3 years after initial puppy series and one-year booster

-         Bordetella with Parainfluenza yearly (intranasal or oral vaccine, often required for boarding or grooming)

-         Leptospirosis* canicola, grippotyphosa, icterohemorrhagica, and pomona yearly

* If your pet has not had this vaccine previously, ask us about your pet's exposure so we can determine whether your pet is considered at risk of contracting this disease

-         Influenza H3N8 and H3N2 bivalent vaccine if risk of exposure, see our Influenza FAQs page for more information

CATS

-         One year Rabies vaccine OR three year Rabies vaccine (both are PureVax vaccines considered lower risk for injection site sarcomas)

-         Feline Herpesvirus, Rhinotracheitis, Panleukopenia, Calicivirus every 3 years after initial kitten series and one-year booster

-         Feline Leukemia (our vaccine is considered lower risk for injection site sarcomas) every 3 years if your cat goes outdoors, may not be necessary if your cat is indoors only

The following PREVENTABLE diseases and parasites can actually be passed from dogs to people (i.e. considered zoonotic):

-         Leptospirosis:  Leptospirosis is a disease that is on the rise.  Animals contract Lepto from exposure to the urine of infected animals.  It is a zoonotic disease which means it can be transmitted to people through the same urine.  Lepto causes sudden kidney failure and can also cause liver problems as well.  There are several types of Lepto that can cause problems in dogs, transmitted through the urine of infected skunks, raccoons, rats, cattle, opossum, and even other dogs.  We vaccinate for the 4 most common types of Lepto, there are other vaccines that only cover 2 types.  If you have had your pet vaccinated with Lepto in the past, but only with a vaccine covering two out of four of the types, we may recommend the initial vaccine and a booster 3-4 weeks later.  We do recommend giving the Lepto vaccine yearly.

-         Intestinal Parasites: The two most common intestinal parasites in dogs are hookworms and roundworms, two parasites that are zoonotic.  Children and older or immunocompromised adults are at a higher risk due to poor hygiene and poor immune system function, respectively.  Heartworm prevention is a monthly dewormer, which is good since most pets will continue to be exposed to eggs in the soil in their environment.  Hookworms have a very short life cycle (2-3 weeks), so we may prescribe an additional dewormer to use in between doses of heartworm prevention. 

-         Rabies: Considered uniformly fatal, you are legally required to have your pet vaccinated for Rabies by a licensed veterinarian.
